This course introduces individuals to potential career opportunities in the highway construction industry. The high-demand for workers has opened program opportunities focused on short-term training leading to long-term employment. You will be introduced to an industry that enables individuals to apply their skills to a wide-range of career opportunities with minimal education and above average income. This is a 4-hour course. Participants will be required to complete all modules. Links to additional resources will be available at the end of this course.
Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will:
- Learn about career pathways, training programs, and high-demand job needs
- Understand job safety in the highway construction industry
- Explore what is effective communication and why it is vital to project success
- Interpret basic expectations and requirements of employability in the industry
- Identify and value the diverse experiences, perspectives, and beliefs of people in the highway construction industry
Module 1: Highway Construction Industry
This module will provide an overview of opportunities for those interested in a long-term career in the highway construction industry in South Dakota. A general overview of basic highway construction terminology and equipment will be offered.
Module 2: Safety in the Highway Construction Industry
This module focuses on safety programs and practices. Topics covered will include job site hazards, personal protective equipment, spotting signals and communication, traffic and pedestrian routing strategies, and obstacles unique to working in remote locations.
Module 3: Effective Construction Communication Skills
This module emphasizes the importance of effective communication in the successful completion of construction projects. Topics include teamwork and relationship building, cultural diversity, critical thinking and problem solving, job skills to ensure success, and challenges in a highway construction job.
Module 4: Career Pathways
This module focuses on finding and pursuing a career in the highway construction industry with minimal training or experience. We’ll discuss various training and job opportunities, skills to assist in applying for and landing a job, and valuable resources for training, funding, and employment opportunities.
